Role Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Network Administrator with strong cabling, rackandstack, and troubleshooting skills to keep the City of Brownsville’s network infrastructure operating at peak performance. In this role you will install and maintain copper and fiber cabling, deploy switches and routers, perform basic configuration, and resolve day-to-day connectivity issues for users across multiple city facilities. Key Responsibilities & Duties

Cable Installation & Management | Pull, terminate, and test Cat5e/6/6a and single/multimode fiber cables Crimp RJ45 connectors, punch down patch panels, and perform basic fiber splicing Use continuity testers, certifiers, and fiber power meters to validate and document results Label, dress, and route cabling to TIA/EIA568 standards for a clean, supportable layout |
Hardware Installation (“Rack & Stack”) | Mount switches, routers, patch panels, WAPs, and UPS units with proper spacing and cable pathways Ensure environmental requirements—cooling, grounding, fire stopping—are met Follow electricalsafety and PoE best practices while working in live racks |
Network Operations & Troubleshooting | Configure switch ports, VLANs, and basic routing as directed by senior engineers Perform ping, traceroute, and other Layer3 tests to isolate issues Support IP addressing (subnetting, DHCP reservations), DNS updates, and simple firewall rules Resolve user tickets for wired, wireless, VPN, and networkprinting problems |
Monitoring, Maintenance & Documentation | Check device and link status through NMS dashboards; escalate anomalies Capture nightly configuration backups and maintain inventory, change logs, and asbuilt drawings Participate in oncall rotation for high priority or afterhours incidents |
Quality & Compliance | Adhere to NIST and Cirrus9 standards for labeling, testing, and acceptance Maintain safe work practices (ladder safety, PPE) and comply with local building codes |
Required Qualifications & Experience
- 2+ years of professional experience as a Network Administrator, Network Technician, or Field Engineer
- Proven competency with:
- Installing and terminating Cat5e/6/6a and fiber cabling
- Cable testers, tone generators, multimeters, and basic fiber tools
- Rackmounting and powering network equipment (switches, routers, WAPs, UPS)
- Basic Layer2/L3 troubleshooting (DHCP, DNS, TCP/IP, ping, traceroute)
- Ability to read floor plans, follow cabling standards (TIA/EIA568), and produce as-built docs
- Comfortable lifting 50 lbs, working on ladders, and occasionally in confined or overhead spaces
- US work authorization and ability to pass a background check suitable for municipal facilities
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or actively pursuing (strongly preferred)
- CompTIA Network+, BICSI Technician, or equivalent cabling certification
- Familiarity with Cisco Catalyst switches (9200/9300 series), Meraki dashboards, or similar NMS tools
- Experience supporting municipal or public sector environments
